A Focused App
Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty presents three games to reinforce good bathroom habits, with a focus on the importance of stopping play once a child feels the urge to go. This concept is also reinforced by four music videos. The main song says "When you have to go potty, stop and go right away. Flush and wash and be on your way."
The Three Games
Daniel Tiger and his friend Katerina Kittycat invite toddlers to build block towers by using virtual blocks. Daniel Tiger periodically stops and announces "I need to go potty." The player helps by tapping the toilet icon so that Daniel can run to the bathroom to go potty. In the bathroom, Daniel demonstrates how to use the toilet, and then solicits the player's help in handing him toilet paper. Then the player helps Daniel to flush the toilet, pump soap into his paws at the sink, rub his paws together, turn off the water, and finally dry Daniel's paws with a towel.
In the second game, Katerina Kittycat is the one who needs to "stop and go potty." This time the two friends are playing with an interactive water wall, where the player can rearrange and add parts and toys to direct the flow of water down the wall.
The third game is played with Daniel Tiger's baby sister Margaret. The player helps Margaret stack rings. Margaret stops periodically to scrunch up her face, fill up her diaper, and then cry. Players tap the diaper icon and then help Mom Tiger to change Margaret's diaper.
Four Music Videos
The four music videos show Daniel Tiger and his friends using toilets in a variety of situations. In one video, Daniel Tiger shows kids that bathrooms are available everywhere, including inside of the cafe, the music store, and the bakery shop.
App Accomplishes Goal
Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty accomplishes its goal of teaching kids to stop playing and go to the potty whenever they feel the urge to pee. The message is delivered in a fun way via games, songs, and videos. Daniel will say things like "I'm back and my blocks are just where I left them" to remind kids that they can return to an activity after taking a break to go to the potty.
While the message of "stop and go potty" is cleverly delivered in this app, the play mechanics at the water wall don't always work. Sometimes the water backs up and doesn't run down. However, since playing at the water wall is secondary to the message this app is trying to convey, this isn't a deal breaker.
Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty
is a helpful app to download during potty-training. As parents, you never know what media or conversations will resonate with your child. Will it be Daniel Tiger's encouragement to "stop and go potty" and his role-modeling that does the trick? Will it be the words to the various songs that you and your child sing together? Who knows. It is good to have many resources on hand during this process, and Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty
puts digital games and songs in your arsenal.
