Chillin' with the Scoobs
Scooby-Doo's owner Shaggy invites you to hang out with his adorable but fearful dog. Shaggy teaches you how to play with Scooby, including doing tricks, feeding him Scooby Snacks, exploring, and playing mini-games. While playing, you and Scooby-Doo find clues to and then solve four different mysteries. My Friend Scooby-Doo! offers hours of self-contained entertainment without any in-app purchases.
How to Play with Scooby-Doo
You start out playing with Scooby-Doo on a spooky beach. Shaggy acts as a mentor and gets you started by suggesting how to play with Scooby. My Friend Scooby-Doo! offers both structured play in the form of tasks and missions as well as open play. Completing tasks is how you eventually find clues to the mysteries. For each of the four mysteries, the player periodically sees a map with over a dozen locations leading to the end of the mystery. For every three tasks completed, Scooby moves forward one spot on the map. Some tasks are spoken aloud, others require reading.
The directed tasks vary greatly -- which is part of why they are fun. One minute you are touching Scooby's paw to make him high-five with you, and the next you are tapping a pile of dirt to make Scooby dig up a surprise. Many of the tasks result in your exploring the scene looking for something specific, such as a spooky scarecrow. Some of these tasks earn you Scooby Snacks which you periodically toss at your hungry canine friend.
The app has many mini-games, which unlock slowly as you make your way through the mysteries. Kids will find camouflaged items in timed hidden object puzzles. They will use their fingers to make Scooby jump over incoming rolling barrels. Tapping ghosts to make them disappear is the focus of another fun game. With the player's help, Scooby even tosses horseshoes. Playing the games is another way players earn Scooby Snacks.
A parcel of collected snacks comes in handy when faced with a mission about dressing Scooby in a kooky costume. Costume cards are hidden throughout the game, and require Scooby Snacks to unlock. A mission might be to take a photo (using the in-game camera) of Scooby sporting a chef's outfit.
My Friend Scooby-Doo! takes place in two locations: a spooky beach scene and an abandoned Old West town. There are two mysteries at each location. As kids play, they unlock clues that are kept in a journal. When they have found enough clues, Scooby and Shaggy solve the mystery. Kids uncover the culprits behind missing boats and looted yachts. They unmask the villains hiding as Miner Forty-Niner and the Spooky Space Kook.
It is a riot to have Scooby-Doo become your virtual pet! The contrast of having Scooby bound around in his Great Dane glory with his inevitable scaredy-cat antics is hilarious to watch. By double tapping on Scooby, players enter "pet mode" where touching different parts of the dog elicits funny responses such as burping, sneezing, and rolling over. And kids will love using the costume cards to dress Scooby in outlandish outfits and then watch as he does silly things.
My Friend Scooby-Doo! captures the look and feel of this popular TV series and brand. While the images of Fred, Daphne, and Velma only appear in the mini-games, the app creates the series' typical spooky atmosphere with sounds, music, and floating ghosts and mummies! And it nails Shaggy's 1960's vibe by having his dialogue punctuated with his trademark "Zoinks" and "Groovy" expletives.
With four separate mysteries, there is a lot of content to explore. The app sustains kids' interests by slowly introducing new games and amusing Scooby costumes. Each mystery features its own unique mini-games; and all share the hidden object puzzles, just with changing backgrounds and hidden objects.
While there is a little disconnect with the solving of the mysteries because you simply get the clues and then don't have to puzzle it out in the end. However, kids won't miss the gumshoeing because there is so much else to do.
