Classic Story With a New Twist
A takeoff on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," this app focuses on Plastic Bottle Scrooge who notices that Earth Day is coming and responds with "Bah. The environment. Humbug." His old buddy Styrofoam warns him that if he doesn't change his ways, he too will end up in the landfill.
Clever Reinvention of Three Ghosts
Scrooge is then visited by three ghosts. A gooey black blob appears as the Ghost of Plastic Past and shows Scrooge how he originated from black crude oil. Next, a floating plastic bag character arrives as the Ghost of Plastic Present. He grabs Scrooge's hand and flies him over the Great Pacific Garbage Patch where garbage pollutes the oceans. The last ghost, the wispy Ghost of Plastic Future shows Scrooge how plastic bottles can be chopped up and melted to create carpets and fleece jackets.
Recyle, Reduce, and Reuse!
The next day, an enlightened Scrooge takes action and leads the Earth Day parade holding banners and signs about recycling, reducing and reusing. Earth Day Carol takes a classic cautionary tale about greed and turns it into a instructive story about recycling.
By re-inventing a classic tale with an environmental theme, Earth Day Carol becomes instantly relatable. The three ghosts are wonderfully drawn and cleverly incorporated into an environmental theme. By embedding science concepts within the story, the app makes learning about recycling fun.
Earth Day Carol is best for kids who like to learn through reading a story.
