How to Use This App
This toddler app is one of those rare finds in the app store, it creates a photo sequence of your child being empathetic. In this app, your toddler will meet 21 distraught little monsters. By touching the screen, your child instantly soothes a monster's distress and makes it happy. More taps on the screen make the monster giggle and dance. When happy, these monsters are cute and adorable.
Why This App Is Good
This app provides young children with exercises in compassion. It can serve as a wonderful stepping stone to discuss emotions. But the gold of this app is what it does in the background, unbeknownst to your child. Parents have the option of setting up the app to take 10 or 20 photos of your child empathizing with these cute monsters. After they play the app, you can see a series of photos showing your child's sympathetic face with the sad monster face superimposed next to it. The next photo shows the look on your child's face when he or she makes the monster happy. This series of photos are precious, and can be easily shared over the parents' email and Facebook.
Make Me Smile! will work best with toddlers and young preschoolers. It is a simple concept -- soothe the upset monsters by touching -- but one that works. Use this app to start a discussion about emotions.
