A new series from School Zone Interactive, Pencil-Pal Software combines a 64-page workbook with a CD-ROM to give children multiple experiences to learn educational material both on and off the computer.
Set in a barn, preschoolers play with barnyard buddies Sherman Sheep, Fancy Filly and others. The barn houses five learning areas.
The heart of this software is the Learning Activities area found behind the red barn door. The format of the Learning Activities stays the same, but the subject matter varies with each round played. Kids are asked to answer a question by moving something from one side of a line of hay bales to the other side. Kids might need to move the object that doesn’t belong to the set pictured on the screen, or they may need to match colors and shapes, numbers or letters. While the content is age-appropriate, the software offers little to no help if the child is having trouble. For example, many preschoolers need help learning how to count. The software expects an answer but does not help the child count the objects on the screen.
The other learning areas include a dot-to-dot activity, a virtual movie theater that shows 12 learning videos, an art studio, and a silly joke activity.
Parents should use the workbook first to teach concepts to their youngsters, and then use the CD-ROM to reinforce the concepts they have taught.
